Fine Pair of Neoclassical Gilt Bronze & Wedgwood Sconces, Sterling Bronze Co
- An exceptional and highly decorative pair of American gilt bronze two-light wall sconces by the prestigious Sterling Bronze Company of New York, incorporating finely executed Wedgwood jasperware plaques depicting classical female figures.
- Dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, this elegant pair exemplifies the refined Neoclassical Revival aesthetic, combining richly ornamented gilt bronze mounts with the delicate artistry of English Wedgwood jasperware.
- Each sconce features a central octagonal plaque with a sage-green ground and applied white classical relief decoration, portraying gracefully draped female figures inspired by Greco-Roman antiquity. The plaques are framed within finely cast gilt bronze surrounds embellished with intricate beaded borders and surmounted by decorative anthemion finials.
- Extending from either side are two beautifully curved, fluted candle arms terminating in finely chased foliate drip pans and classical urn-form candle sockets. The central supports are enriched with acanthus ornamentation and elegant pendant finials, creating a harmonious and architecturally balanced composition.
- The juxtaposition of the soft green Wedgwood plaques against the warm golden bronze produces a particularly sophisticated decorative effect.
- The sconces retain an original manufacturer's label reading “Sterling Bronze Company, New York,” while the reverse of the jasperware bears an impressed “WEDGWOOD” mark, confirming the distinguished English manufacturer.
- The Sterling Bronze Company was an important American producer of decorative bronze furnishings and architectural metalwork, particularly noted for its finely crafted lighting fixtures and ornamental bronze objects during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
- A beautiful and uncommon marriage of American bronze craftsmanship and English ceramic artistry, this pair would make an elegant addition to a distinguished residence, formal drawing room, library, or sophisticated Neoclassical interior.
