Exceptional Syrian Damascus Judaica Mixed Metal Biblical Charger, Circa 1900
- An exceptional and highly unusual Syrian Damascene mixed-metal charger of remarkable artistic quality, produced in Damascus circa 1900. Measuring an impressive 16.5 inches in diameter, this extraordinary work of Judaica combines elaborate biblical imagery, finely engraved Hebrew inscriptions, Arabic calligraphy, and the sophisticated metalworking traditions for which Damascus was internationally celebrated.
- The magnificent circular composition is exceptionally rich in detail, featuring an elaborate arrangement of biblical scenes, historical figures, symbolic imagery, and intricate geometric ornamentation, executed in contrasting silver-colored, brass, and copper-toned metals.
- At the heart of the charger is a beautifully engraved representation of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, surrounded by an extraordinary assortment of animals, birds, vegetation, and the serpent entwined around the Tree of Knowledge. Two finely rendered angels flank the central composition, while the Tablets of the Law appear prominently above.
- Immediately below is an elaborate biblical scene depicting the discovery of the infant Moses among the bulrushes, with Egyptian figures, palm trees, architectural details, and radiating sunlight.
- Encircling these central compositions is a remarkable series of individually engraved medallions illustrating episodes and figures from the Hebrew Bible. Among the identifiable subjects are Abraham, Joseph, Moses, the Exodus, the crossing of the Red Sea, the manna from heaven, and the Seven Species associated with the Land of Israel. Portrait medallions depicting King Solomon and King David further enrich the composition, each accompanied by Hebrew inscriptions.
- The lower portion is dominated by a magnificent spread-winged eagle, its feathers meticulously engraved with extraordinary precision and extending dramatically across the width of the composition.
- Particularly fascinating is the integration of Hebrew and Arabic inscriptions within a single decorative program. The surrounding border incorporates elaborate Islamic geometric interlacing, finely worked arabesques, and Arabic calligraphic cartouches, demonstrating the artistic synthesis characteristic of the celebrated Damascene workshops.
- The workmanship is especially impressive, with densely engraved backgrounds, delicate crosshatched surfaces, contrasting metallic tones, and an extraordinary degree of precision throughout. The intricate geometric border provides a magnificent architectural framework for the elaborate biblical narrative.
- Damascus was among the most important centers of decorative metalwork in the Middle East during the 19th century. Its craftsmen were renowned for their mastery of engraved and inlaid metal objects, producing exceptional works for local patrons and an increasingly international clientele.
- This remarkable charger represents a particularly fascinating expression of that tradition, combining the visual language of Syrian Islamic decorative arts with an extensive Jewish biblical iconographic program. Its unusual subject matter, exceptional density of decoration, and sophisticated execution distinguish it as a highly collectible example of late Ottoman Syrian metalwork.
- An impressive and historically significant work of Middle Eastern decorative art, particularly suited to an important collection of Judaica, Islamic metalwork, or objects reflecting the rich multicultural artistic heritage of Damascus.
