Exceptional 19th Century Silver-Gilt Mounted Banded Agate Ewer Museum Provenance
- An exceptional nineteenth-century Renaissance Revival carved banded agate ewer with magnificent sculptural silver-gilt mounts, formerly in the collection of the Deutsches Edelsteinmuseum (German Gemstone Museum), Idar-Oberstein, Germany.
- The elegantly proportioned ovoid body is masterfully carved from a remarkable specimen of translucent banded agate, displaying dramatic natural striations in shades of chocolate brown, cognac, amber, and golden honey. Finely executed vertical fluting adorns the shoulders and lower body, complemented by a slender molded neck, gracefully flared pouring lip, and circular spreading foot.
- Of particular distinction is the elaborate silver-gilt handle, richly chased with scrolling acanthus foliage, delicate volutes, and an expressive grotesque mask at its lower terminal. The exceptional quality of the metalwork reflects the nineteenth-century European fascination with Renaissance goldsmithing and the magnificent hardstone vessels created for princely Kunstkammer collections.
- The sophisticated combination of beautifully figured agate, precision carving, and richly sculptural silver-gilt mounts exemplifies the extraordinary craftsmanship of nineteenth-century European decorative arts.
