Exceptional Japanese Cloisonné Enamel Vase Attributed to Hayashi Kodenji
- An exceptional Japanese cloisonné enamel vase of the Meiji period, circa 1890, attributed to the celebrated Nagoya enamel master Hayashi Kodenji (1831–1915). Distinguished by its brilliant mirror-black enamel ground, extraordinarily delicate gold and silver wirework, and sophisticated naturalistic decoration, this magnificent vase represents the remarkable technical and artistic achievements of Japanese enameling during the late 19th century.
- Of elegant baluster form, the vase features gently rounded shoulders, a slender neck, and a delicately flared mouth. Its highly polished black enamel surface provides a dramatic background for an exquisitely rendered flowering tree accompanied by three sparrows, one perched among the branches and two depicted in flight.
- The flowering tree rises gracefully from the lower body, its finely articulated branches extending across the surface in a beautifully balanced composition. The trunk is rendered in subtle graduated shades of brown, tan, and gray, while clusters of delicate white blossoms with yellow centers emerge among slender leaves in muted tones of green, olive, and gold. Additional flowering plants in shades of lavender, purple, and white decorate the lower section.
- Particularly noteworthy is the sophisticated use of precious-metal wire. The two sparrows in flight are delineated in exceptionally fine gold wire, while the flowering branches, foliage, and perched bird are predominantly executed in silver wire. This deliberate contrast demonstrates the remarkable precision and artistic sensitivity of the enameler.
- The composition reflects the influence of traditional Japanese painting, with generous areas of uninterrupted black enamel creating a striking sense of depth, movement, and refinement. The brilliant, mirror-like finish further enhances the intricate wirework and subtle gradations of color.
- The vase is elegantly finished with finely detailed ornamental borders beneath the flared mouth and around the foot, incorporating repeating geometric and foliate motifs.
- Attribution to Hayashi Kodenji:
- Hayashi Kodenji (1831–1915) was among the most important Japanese cloisonné enamel artists of the Meiji period. Working in Nagoya, a leading center of Japanese enamel production, Hayashi and his workshop became internationally recognized for their exceptional technical refinement, intricate precious-metal wirework, and sophisticated naturalistic compositions.
- Although the present vase is unsigned, its remarkable quality, distinctive treatment of flowering branches and sparrows, selective application of gold and silver wire, and finely articulated ornamental borders bear compelling stylistic similarities to documented examples by Hayashi Kodenji and his workshop.
- Important Auction Comparisons:
- A particularly compelling comparison is a signed Hayashi Kodenji workshop vase offered at Christie's, New York, on November 18, 2015, Lot 12, in Innovative Japanese Design: Art of the Meiji Period. Decorated with sparrows flying and perched among flowering cherry branches against a dark blue ground, the example employs fine gold wire and exhibits striking similarities in subject matter, composition, and execution to the present vase.
- Further comparisons include:
- - Christie's, London, October 15, 2014, Lot 103: A marked Hayashi Kodenji vase depicting a bird and flowering plants, with comparable ornamental foliate borders.
- - Christie's, Japanese Art: Meiji Period Magnificence: A marked workshop vase decorated with a bird perched on a tree, executed in gold and silver wire against a dark ground.
- - Sotheby's, Masters of Enamel, 2021: A signed Hayashi Kodenji vase, with catalogue discussion of the artist's importance and international exhibition achievements.
- Hayashi Kodenji's work is also represented in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, providing an important institutional reference for the artist's contribution to Japanese decorative arts.
- The close stylistic relationships between the present vase and these documented works provide meaningful support for its attribution to Hayashi Kodenji or his workshop, although the absence of a signature prevents definitive identification.
