Rare Indian Mughal-Style Gold-Inlaid Silver, Enamel & Jeweled Box

  • An exceptional and unusually elaborate Indian Mughal-style jeweled silver, gold-inlaid, and polychrome enamel box, dating to the mid-to-late nineteenth century, circa 1860. Distinguished by its extraordinary craftsmanship, richly colored enamel decoration, intricate gold ornamentation, and lavish gemstone embellishments, this remarkable object exemplifies the luxurious traditions of Indian courtly decorative arts.
  • Of highly unusual quatrefoil form, the box is raised on four spherical feet and decorated throughout with exceptionally intricate enamelwork. The sides feature a brilliant translucent ruby-red enamel ground embellished with delicately rendered birds, flowering branches, and scrolling foliage in shades of white, cobalt blue, green, and gold.
  • The magnificent domed cover is divided into four turquoise-green enamel panels enriched with elaborate gold-inlaid floral ornamentation. Each panel is further embellished with red gemstones, possibly rubies, and colorless stones, possibly rose-cut diamonds, arranged in finely executed floral compositions.
  • The elaborate borders are adorned with continuous rows of small pearls and pink-red gemstones, while a magnificent **natural pearl finial** crowns the center of the cover, providing an elegant focal point to the richly jeweled composition. The interior is beautifully gilded, creating a striking contrast to the vibrant exterior decoration.
  • Particularly noteworthy is the exceptional combination of gold inlay, finely executed polychrome enamel, intricate gemstone settings, and pearl ornamentation. The sophisticated floral designs and naturalistic bird motifs reflect the enduring influence of Mughal artistic traditions, particularly those associated with the celebrated enameling and jewelry workshops of northern India.
  • The elaborate construction, unusual sculptural form, and richly ornamented natural pearl finial distinguish this remarkable box from more conventional Indian enameled objects of the period.
  • An extraordinary nineteenth-century Indian objet de vertu, combining precious materials, exceptional decorative richness, and the sophisticated craftsmanship associated with Mughal-inspired luxury arts.
