Rare Indian Mughal-Style White Jade Gold Diamond Ruby Emerald Jeweled Casket

  • An exceptional and richly jeweled Indian Mughal-style carved white jade casket, dating to the late nineteenth century / early 20th century circa 1890–1920. This remarkable jewel box combines the refined beauty of translucent white jade with elaborate gold ornamentation and a magnificent arrangement of diamonds, rubies, and emeralds.
  • Of elegant rectangular form, the box is carved from beautifully translucent, pale milky-white jade, with a fitted hinged cover, finely shaped edges, and a raised base supported on four decorative gold feet.
  • The exterior is lavishly embellished with intricate gold floral mounts incorporating numerous gemstones arranged in symmetrical flowering branches and stylized blossoms. The central flowers are composed of rose-cut diamonds surrounding vibrant ruby centers, while the extending gold branches terminate in alternating ruby and emerald settings.
  • The hinged cover is equally elaborate, featuring a magnificent central jeweled flower surrounded by scrolling gold foliage, ruby and emerald buds, and additional diamond-set ornamentation. An elegant arched gold carrying handle rises above the lid, adding a distinctive architectural quality to the composition.
  • Particularly noteworthy is the sophisticated contrast between the luminous white jade, richly colored gemstones, and warm gold decoration. The delicacy of the floral arrangements and the meticulous workmanship of the jeweled settings reflect the enduring influence of Mughal courtly jewelry and the celebrated Indian tradition of combining precious hardstones with gold and gemstones.
  • The box is further distinguished by its elaborate gold corner ornaments, finely worked hinges and clasp, and four decorative fluted feet. The interior reveals the translucent character of the carved stone, with the exterior jeweled decoration subtly visible through the jade.
  • An extraordinary Indian jeweled objet de vertu, combining the elegance of Mughal-inspired design with the luxurious materials and sophisticated craftsmanship associated with nineteenth-century Indian decorative arts.
  • *Very good condition, with minor age-related wear consistent with age. IThe carved white stone retains its beautiful translucency, while the gold mounts and jeweled decoration display an attractive antique patina. Minor surface imperfections are visible upon close examination. Please refer to the photographs for further details.
